Buy, don’t build: Salesforce, Workday, Anthropic, Cohere, Freshworks and Accenture go shopping, and Workday and Adobe sign AI partnerships
As AI agents move into real work, platforms are buying what makes them safe and useful there (identity, security, spend control and the customer data they act on), and the companies that own those pieces are being bought for fit, not size.

Why these deals are strategic
As AI agents move from pilots into real work, the platforms are buying what keeps them under control. Workday bought identity governance so it can decide who, and what, has access to its systems. Anthropic and Cohere bought security: confidential computing for sensitive data, and autonomous vulnerability research. Freshworks bought control over software and AI spend. Salesforce spent $5.66bn on Braze and bought Loops, so its agents can act on live customer behaviour and explain what changed, and Accenture bought the customer data that makes AI programmes pay. These strategic acquirers needed a piece their agents cannot work without.
For founders: the trust layer around agents (identity, security, governance and spend) has become a buying category of its own. If your product makes agents safer to deploy or cheaper to run, the large platforms want to own it.
Selected strategic deals
Salesforce buys Braze: live customer behaviour for its agents
Why it’s strategic
Braze turns what a customer is doing right now into a message across app, web, email, SMS and WhatsApp, for about 2,770 brands including Canva, Instacart and Venmo. Salesforce will connect it to Marketing Cloud, Data 360 and Agentforce, so its agents act on live behaviour rather than last week’s data. The price is $5.66bn in cash, or $47.50 a share: a 58% premium to the previous close, yet still below Braze’s 2021 IPO price of $65 (Axios). It follows Listen Labs and Loops, both announced in the previous four weeks.
What it means for founders
Strategic buyers will pay a large premium even when the public market has marked a company down. What they pay for is the step where data turns into action in front of a customer; inside an agent platform, that step is worth more than as a stand-alone tool.
New York customer engagement platform (Nasdaq: BRZE) serving about 2,770 brands from 15 offices worldwide.
CRM group. Braze is set to strengthen Marketing Cloud and connect to Data 360 and Agentforce.

Salesforce buys Loops: an analyst that explains why the numbers moved
Why it’s strategic
Dashboards show what happened; Loops explains why. It monitors a company’s KPIs, detects trends and anomalies, ranks the likely causes by impact, and can be asked from Slack or email. Salesforce will fold the technology and team into Tableau to move it from reporting towards agentic analytics. Analysts see a classic tuck-in, with the product and brand absorbed into Tableau (TechTarget).
What it means for founders
In analytics, value is moving from showing data to deciding what to do about it. A small team with a working “why did this change” engine can be worth more as part of a large BI platform than as a product it has to sell on its own.
Tel Aviv AI analytics start-up, founded in 2020; raised a $14m seed round led by Scale Venture Partners.

Workday buys C1: an identity layer for people and AI agents
Why it’s strategic
Workday already knows who works for a company; now it wants to decide what that company’s AI agents may touch. C1 (formerly ConductorOne) gives people and agents scoped access to business systems, enforces policy, asks for human approval and keeps a record of every action. It will extend Workday’s Agent System of Record from registering agents to governing their access across Workday and other systems, which Workday calls “the identity governance layer for people, money, and agents”.
What it means for founders
Once agents act on behalf of employees, identity and access stop being an IT checkbox and become part of the system of record. Security products built on data the platform already owns (who people are and what they may do) are natural targets for the suites.

Identity governance platform with offices in San Francisco and Portland; raised more than $100m, including a $79m Series B led by Greycroft (Oct 2025).
HR and finance cloud for more than 11,500 organisations, including over 65% of the Fortune 500.

Anthropic buys Opaque: confidential AI for regulated enterprises
Why it’s strategic
Banks, insurers and governments want frontier models, but cannot send sensitive data where they cannot verify how it is handled. Opaque runs AI on sensitive data in protected environments and produces cryptographic evidence of what happened to it. Its team is joining Anthropic and Opaque is winding down, which gives Anthropic security credentials for on-premise and sovereign deployments, an area where Opaque already had adoption in Europe and the UAE (Dealroom).
What it means for founders
Model providers are absorbing the security layer instead of leaving it to partners. If your technology is what lets a regulated customer say yes to AI, the model companies themselves are now buyers, not only partners.
Confidential AI company spun out of UC Berkeley’s RISELab, co-founded by Ion Stoica and Raluca Ada Popa. Last valued at $300m.

Cohere to buy AISLE: autonomous security research, built in Prague
Why it’s strategic
AISLE builds autonomous systems that find and help fix previously unknown vulnerabilities in critical software; in its first year out of stealth it found more than 500 that were assigned CVEs. Cohere will use it to launch Cohere Cyber, a new cybersecurity business, and plans a substantial long-term investment in Prague as its global centre for AI cybersecurity. It follows Cohere’s acquisitions of Reliant AI and Aleph Alpha and deepens its presence in Europe.
What it means for founders
For model providers selling to governments and regulated industries, security is becoming a product line, not a feature. A specialist team with measurable results, here hundreds of new CVEs, can become the core of a buyer’s new business, with the founders leading it.
AI security company founded in 2024, with a team in Prague. Founders Ondřej Vlček, Jaya Baloo and Stanislav Fort take leadership roles at Cohere.

Freshworks buys Torii: governing SaaS and AI spend
Why it’s strategic
Companies are losing track of which AI tools they pay for, who uses them and what they cost. Torii maps applications, AI projects, licences, users and spend, tracks AI consumption down to the token, and automates the follow-up: cutting waste, handling renewals and keeping compliance evidence ready. Freshworks will bring it into Freshservice, its IT service management product, so that, in CEO Dennis Woodside’s words, finance and IT “stop reconciling spreadsheets and start making decisions together”.
What it means for founders
AI spend is the new SaaS sprawl, and it lands on the same desk. A product that gives IT and finance one shared view of what they pay for is worth much more inside the platform where IT already works every day.
New York-based SaaS and AI management platform, founded in 2017; a Leader in Gartner’s 2026 Magic Quadrant for SaaS Management Platforms. Customers include Hearst, Groupon and Koch.
Nasdaq-listed business software company. Torii joins Freshservice.

Accenture buys Sagacity: the customer data that makes AI pay
Why it’s strategic
Clients want AI programmes with measurable results, and that starts with knowing their customers. Sagacity analyses customer data to show how customers behave and how services can improve, using its own data assets and AI-enabled technology. Its more than 140 people join Accenture’s customer operations business, which takes clients from strategy and design through implementation to running the service.
What it means for founders
The global integrators are buying proprietary data and specialist teams that make their AI work deliverable and measurable. A data or services business with its own assets and trusted client relationships can be strategic to them, even without a software product.

Workday and Anthropic: the system of record meets the model
Why it’s strategic
Workday is bringing its Sana agents and its data into Claude through the open Model Context Protocol. Sana runs multi-step HR and finance processes, such as compensation cycles and the financial close, and calls on Claude for the reasoning in each step; people working in Claude can analyse Workday data and act on it within their existing Workday permissions. The relationship runs both ways: Anthropic runs its finance and people operations on Workday, and Workday uses Claude internally.
What it means for founders
Systems of record are opening up to the models rather than fighting them, while keeping control of permissions and the audit trail. Open protocols make it easier for founders to plug into both sides, and the governance layer between them (identity, permissions, audit) is exactly what Workday bought C1 to own, the same week.

Adobe and NVIDIA: faster creative tools and an on-brand agent
Why it’s strategic
Adobe is optimising Photoshop, Premiere and Substance 3D for NVIDIA hardware, rebuilding parts of the Frame.io cloud pipeline on NVIDIA acceleration (about 5x faster embedding generation in early tests), and running Brand Concierge, its customer-facing brand agent, on NVIDIA’s Nemotron open models. Brand Concierge on Nemotron reaches enterprise customers later in 2026.
What it means for founders
The large application companies are tuning their agents on open models and specialist infrastructure, not only on closed frontier models. Founders building agents for marketing and content should expect incumbents to compete on speed and cost, and to look for partners or targets that help them do it.

Also on our radar
- Modal raises $750m at a $15.75bn valuation. The round, led by Accel, comes about five months after a Series C at $4.65bn; Modal, which runs code and sandboxes for AI agents across more than 20 cloud providers, says its run rate is above $1bn (Tech Funding News, 14 Oct). Infrastructure for running agents is now priced as a category of its own.
- OpenAI hires the Notch founders. Vinay Jain and Aman Jain, who built Max, an autonomous performance-marketing agent for online stores, are joining OpenAI’s Ads team (14 Oct). Terms and structure are undisclosed and OpenAI has not commented, so this is a team move rather than a confirmed acquisition.
- ZoomInfo puts Workbounce to work. ZoomInfo has built Workbounce, which it acquired in 2024, into its GTM.AI platform, adding a company’s calls, emails and documents to the market data its agents use (14 Oct).
