Meta
Building personal superintelligence on every layer of the stack.
Meta now has a frontier model, the fastest-growing consumer agent of 2026 and AI glasses at scale. We map its deals and talent bets, look inside Meta Superintelligence Labs, and assess what the pushback against Muse means for the AI market and for founders.

From open models to personal superintelligence.
Open models
Llama as an open alternative. AI used mainly to rank feeds and target ads.
The reset
Llama 4 underwhelms. Meta pays $14.3bn to bring in Scale AI’s CEO, forms a new lab and hires aggressively.
Personal superintelligence
Muse models and the Muse agent, AI glasses as the device, gigawatt-scale data centres and its own chips.
Talent
$14.3bn
The Scale AI stake that brought Alexandr Wang to run the lab.
Compute
$145bn
Top of 2026 capex guidance, double the $72bn of 2025.
Devices
7m+
Meta glasses sold by EssilorLuxottica in 2025, triple 2024.
Distribution
3.64bn
People using Meta’s apps every day.
The goal is personal superintelligence for everyone, and glasses will become our main computing devices.
Misspending a couple of hundred billion dollars would be unfortunate, but the bigger risk is not being aggressive enough.
Meta plans to build tens of gigawatts this decade, and hundreds of gigawatts over time.
We build our own data centres and chips, and we want sovereignty over our own models.
We will work on monetising Muse sooner than our normal playbook, taking a share of the value we help people create.
We are building the capacity to serve more than a billion people with Muse over the next few years.
Meta Superintelligence Labs: rebuilt in under a year.
Alexandr Wang
Leads the lab and TBD Lab, which trains the frontier models. Joined with Meta’s $14.3bn Scale AI investment.
Nat Friedman

Shengjia Zhao
Former OpenAI researcher who worked on ChatGPT and GPT-4; chief scientist since July 2025.
Daniel Gross
Runs capacity strategy and supplier partnerships for the data-centre build.
Release timeline
Muse Spark
The lab’s first model; now powers Meta AI.
Meta Model API
Muse Spark 1.1 for developers, at about a quarter of rivals’ prices.
Muse Glimmer
Open-weight model that runs on a single consumer GPU.
Muse agent
Personal agent with its own secure cloud computer.
Muse Wonder
First frontier model, priced level with Claude Opus 5.5.
How fast Muse caught on
- #57 → #5Meta AI on the US App Store after Muse Spark
- +60%more people using Meta AI each day
- 1.8mMuse downloads; ChatGPT had 1.3m at the same point
- 10.2mUS downloads; ChatGPT had 3.7m at day 40
- 10m+people set up Muse; about 25% use it daily
Download figures are third-party estimates (Apptopia at day 12, Sensor Tower at day 40) and are measured differently; Meta reports set-ups, not downloads. Sources: TechCrunch, PPC Land, Meta Q2 and Q3 2026 calls.
A consumer agent at platform scale
Muse showed that a company with 3.6bn daily users can turn a model into a habit within weeks. Shopping is already its most common use.
Rivals answered within weeks
OpenAI launched its Dots agents at DevDay, and Google is testing Gemini calling businesses on users’ behalf.
Cheaper models raise the floor
Open-weight Muse models and low API prices put pressure on paid mid-tier models and on what developers will pay.
Consolidation for horizontal agents
Investors expect general consumer assistants to struggle, while security, identity and developer tools for agents attract funding.
Nine months ago we rebuilt our AI stack from scratch: new infrastructure, architecture and data pipelines. Muse Spark is the result.
Personal agents need their own secure computer, so Meta built one for every person who uses Muse.
The best personal agent should feel like a team of experts in your corner.
Job number one was hiring the best people in every discipline, and we were not going to be bottlenecked by compute.
Agents force every platform to choose: open up or guard the shelf.
- Block
Cloudflare
Blocks AI crawlers by default and lets publishers charge for access, turning agent traffic into something sites can price.
- Block
Meta, on WhatsApp
Closes the WhatsApp Business API to general-purpose AI assistants, protecting its own Meta AI. The gatekeeping runs both ways.
- Lawsuit
Amazon v. Perplexity
Amazon sues to stop the Comet browser agent shopping its site. An appeals court lifted the injunction in August 2026; the case continues.
- Opening
Google with Shopify, Walmart, Etsy and others
Universal Commerce Protocol, so agents can check out with the merchant’s consent. OpenAI and Stripe back a rival protocol.
- Own agent
Amazon
Merges Rufus and Alexa+ into Alexa for Shopping. Its own agent is the one it wants shoppers to use.
- Block
Amazon
Blocks Muse on Amazon.com as an “unauthorized AI agent”. Days later it opens its seller tools to Claude: agents are welcome where they help Amazon’s sellers, not where they replace its storefront.
- Opening
Walmart and Shopify
Walmart builds an agent gateway with spending limits; Shopify opens Shop Pay to Muse. Both see agents as new demand.
- Block
Banks, airlines and retailers
JPMorgan, Citi and Schwab block agents from moving money; Delta, Tapestry and Kohl’s do not let agents complete purchases. Trust and fraud come first.
For the AI market
There will not be one open web for agents. They will reach most of the internet, but the biggest stores, banks and apps will let them in only when it pays. Expect partnerships, fees and verified-agent programmes rather than a single standard.
For platforms and incumbents
The question is whether an outside agent brings you customers or takes them away. Platforms paid on the transaction, such as Shopify and the payment networks, are opening up. Platforms paid on attention and ads are guarding the front door and building their own agents.
For founders
If your product is an agent, access is your biggest risk: one blocked integration can break it overnight. Build with partners who gain from letting you in, or own the customer relationship yourself. And there is a real business in what both sides now need: agent identity, permissions, fraud controls and payments.

What Meta has paid for so far
Founders who ship
Most 2026 deals were small teams whose founders took senior roles: Moltbook, Dreamer, Stilla.ai and Sundial.
Voice and audio
PlayAI and WaveForms give Meta AI, Muse and the glasses natural, expressive voice.
Hard-to-hire hardware skills
Rivos for AI chips, Limitless for wearables and ARI for robotics: expertise that takes years to build in-house.
Leaders and reach in key markets
CRED’s founder now runs WhatsApp, and the Reliance venture brings enterprise reach in India.

Where we think consumer AI goes next.
- 01
Personal agents become the front door
The agent people use daily will decide where they shop, book and search. Every platform will push its own.
Signal · Muse: 10m+ set-ups in six weeks, shopping the top use; OpenAI Dots; Gemini calling businesses for users
- 02
Access is negotiated, then standardised
Expect more blocks and lawsuits first, then paid access, agent identity and commerce protocols that let platforms choose who gets in.
Signal · Amazon blocks Muse; Amazon v. Perplexity; UCP and ACP; Visa, Mastercard and Ant on “know your agent”
- 03
Who answers when an agent goes too far?
Agents now log in, pay and act inside other companies’ systems. When one oversteps its instructions, leaks data or touches critical infrastructure, someone has to be responsible. Permissions, audit trails, agent identity and liability will matter as much as the model.
Signal · Amazon flags agents that hide their identity and store logins; banks block agents from moving money; Muse ships with a sandboxed computer and a monitoring agent; agent-security start-ups such as Zenity raise large rounds
- 04
The device race moves to the face
Glasses, pendants and audio wearables become the main way to reach an agent away from the phone.
Signal · Muse comes to Meta glasses from November; 7m+ Meta glasses sold in 2025; Apple buys Q.ai; OpenAI device not before 2027
- 05
Capex has to show returns
Investors will reward AI spending only where it shows up in revenue and margins. Expect more joint ventures and equity funding.
Signal · Negative free cash flow in Q3 2026; Hyperion and El Paso JVs; $37.5bn equity raise priced in October
- 06
Talent deals face more scrutiny
Licence-and-hire structures will draw more review, which changes timelines and terms for sellers.
Signal · FTC comments on reverse acqui-hires (Mar 2026); senators’ letter naming Scale and Meta; China blocks Manus
For founders
Is your product a layer the AI platforms need?
Meta, Google, Amazon, OpenAI and Anthropic are all buying teams and technology that make agents, models and devices more useful, from consumer and agentic applications to identity, security, data and infrastructure. If your company sits in that stack, we are happy to walk you through your options, starting with an assessment of where you stand.

Buy, don’t build: Salesforce, Workday, Anthropic, Cohere, Freshworks and Accenture go shopping, and Workday and Adobe sign AI partnerships
As AI agents move into real work, platforms are buying what makes them safe and useful there (identity, security, spend control and the customer data they act on), and the companies that own those pieces are being bought for fit, not size.
